    The Australian Open - 2002

The first Grand Slam of the year always promises a lot and, most often, it does not disappoint.

This year Lindsay Davenport and Juan Carlos Ferrero have withdrawn due to injuries; Lleyton Hewitt will play but he had very recently suffered from a bout of chicken pox; the new 'Extreme Heat' policy has raked up controversy; Pete Sampras won the Kooyong International to prove that after his dismal form last year, this year might be different.

The Australian Open 2002 seedings were announced with 32 seeds being used for the first time in the tournament's history. Let us have a look at the top five seeds in the women's and men's sections.
